Three men of I believe the Grenadier Guards. These are veterans of the Crimean War and was taken the same year the war ended; this being 1856.
A series of photographs were commissioned which this was part of entitled “Heroes of the Crimean War” These were taken by Robert Howlett and Jopseph Cundall. This particular image was taken by Cundall.
The man on the far left is a pioneer. These were the men of the line regiments which took out obstacles of the way of the men such as battlefield debris and doors. This is shown by the pair of axes on the left arm and the leather apron. He is seen carrying his axe which was his tool of the trade.
This is an Albumen (silver) print.
Stunning!
