Coded Confederate message decoded after 147 years
A coded message contained within a small bottle in the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond, Virginia has just been deciphered. It was delivered to Confederate General John Pemberton at Vicksburg, Mississippi and is dated 4th July 1863; the day that the town fell to Union forces. The message informs the General that no reinforcements are coming to the General’s aid. One part reads...
